About us

The Aspirations Initiative provide a variety of projects throughout Thanet which are available to everyone, free of charge.  Our projects include:

The Aspire Education Programmes creates a platform for young people to discover their personal aspirations.  The Aspire team are dedicated to the welfare of our students and we provide much more than just training; we offer support, care and mentoring through the course and also for a further three months after it has been completed. No young person is ever refused assistance or help by the Aspire team; if there is something that we are unable to do or there is a need for specialist support, our staff are able to signpost to services offered by our partners. We developed the programme after realising that many hard to reach young people ae not ready, or willing, to engage with formal further education. This project allows for a more subtle, bespoke transition into future employment, education or training. Every student is treated as an individual – following an initial assessment, we will tailor their course to their needs and aspirations.

The Aspire Homeless Project is a year-round outreach scheme, which works in conjunction with the Thanet Winter Shelter Scheme . We provide individuals pathways to move them from homelessness into rented accommodation, provide opportunities for education and training to help them into employment, and also give them the skills and support to rehabilitate them back into our community. The project operates in three ways:
1. Weekly street outreach around Thanet
2. Drop in Café every Friday at our Aspirations Centre
3. The Aspire Homeless Course

The Aspire Homeless Course is a seven week programme that looks at improving the general wellbeing of people who are street sleepers, sofa surfers or newly re-housed. It looks at practical issues such as filling in forms, relationships, making home, tenancy, debt and budgeting, job searching, volunteering and CV writing. We recognise that each person has their own story and barriers, so we assign a mentor to every student to help them in their journey.

The Aspiration Healthy Living Centre is aimed at providing the District with a one stop shop of health related services – such as smoking, weight loss, substance misuse, sexual health and mental well-being. The Centre opened in January 2015 in partnership with KCC Public Health, Pipeline and Orbit South; it is the fifth centre of its kind in Kent, and the only one in East Kent. The Centre promotes healthy living mentally, physically and spiritually.  We believe that a person’s individual well-being faces a multitude of challenges throughout the seasons of their life. Our vision is to provide a variety of health services in an environment where people feel safe to share their problems, are able to show their vulnerabilities and ask for help, and to help them become motivated to raise their aspirations and improve the way they live. We provide advice, access to education and support for the entire community in Thanet, via drop in café sessions and 1:1 meetings, as well as a place to find respite, relax and rejuvenate.

Facilities at the Centre include two classrooms, a private counselling room, a reading corner and a café serving drinks and snacks (with free Wi-Fi). There is also a hands-on training workshop available where you can learn construction, upcycling, bicycle engineering and DIY skills.

The Glo Community Hub at Brunswick court in Ramsgate underwent 2 months of renovations by a team of volunteers to create a flexible and inviting space to serve the local community. It is being used by local residents as a place to socialise, borrow books from the community library, and to work from. The hub offers a gateway to community activities as well as statutory help and other support groups that may be able to offer help outside of that.

The services currently running at the Hub are:
• Tea Rooms - Every last Tuesday of the month senior citizens meet for a free cream tea, a chance to chat, and to find out what else is going on around the area for them to take part of.
• Community Surgery - The local Ward Councillor is using the Hub once a month to host a community surgery, an opportunity for local residents to meet with her and discuss issues about the local area.
• Job Club - This is a drop-in forum each Monday for people who want to get some advice on writing their CV, looking and applying for jobs, and help with preparing for interviews.
• Margate (Thanet) Task Force Information - An opportunity for the community to meet the team, get advice and be signposted to relevant projects available to them.
• East Kent Housing Residents Meeting
• Local Ward Councillor Community Surgery
• Glo Sew - A free craft workshop, to come and meet others and get creative.
• NHS Smoking Cessation
• Community Library

Cafe Haven provides light touch support to adults with mild mental health issues. It is a self-help group which is run entirely by volunteers who have experienced their own problems and is made available to anybody that would like to attend. Café Haven is a weekly community space of peer to peer support specifically to reduce isolation, provide outside encouragement and a space that can help an individual grow in relational confidence.  We partner with community health service providers to signpost and give on-going support, and look to different local businesses to provide valuable work experience if required, as well as voluntary work.

Dignity is our clothing bank project with a difference. We have renovated a space within our Aspirations Healthy Living Centre for a shop front complete with changing rooms to deliver a clothing bank that operates as a retail shop would; providing the same shopping experience as many others take for granted. It allows them to browse and try on clothes, get toiletries and even grab a free coffee and cake at the café afterwards. Customers are issued a “community passport” with a starting credit of £25 which they can use on whatever they would like from the store. We accept referrals for the passports from our statutory partners, but it is also available to those that drop by and are in need.

We need your help so we can continue to offer and grow expand our services!

Thank you for your support and good luck!
